Background of the Study

Preterm infants, born before 37 weeks of gestation, face numerous health challenges, including respiratory issues, feeding difficulties, and developmental delays. Home-based nursing care has emerged as a potential strategy for improving outcomes in preterm infants after discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). In Sokoto State, where healthcare access can be limited, home-based nursing offers a means of providing continuous care to preterm infants and their families, ensuring better monitoring and support in the critical early months of life.

Nurses working in home-based care settings are integral in educating parents, monitoring infant growth and development, and providing essential interventions to support the infant’s health. Studies suggest that home-based nursing interventions can lead to improved health outcomes for preterm infants, including enhanced growth, better feeding, and reduced hospital readmissions (Saleh et al., 2024). This study will investigate the impact of home-based nursing care on the growth and development of preterm infants in Sokoto State, with a focus on outcomes such as weight gain, developmental milestones, and overall health.

Statement of the Problem

Preterm infants in Sokoto State face numerous challenges, including high rates of complications and inadequate follow-up care. While home-based nursing could improve their growth and development, there is limited research on its effectiveness in the region. This study aims to investigate how home-based nursing care affects the health and developmental outcomes of preterm infants in Sokoto State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of home-based nursing care on the growth and development of preterm infants in Sokoto State.
  2. To evaluate the outcomes of home-based nursing care in terms of weight gain and developmental milestones in preterm infants.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving the implementation of home-based nursing care for preterm infants in Sokoto State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the impact of home-based nursing care on the growth and development of preterm infants in Sokoto State?
  2. How do home-based nursing interventions affect the weight gain and developmental milestones of preterm infants?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve home-based nursing care for preterm infants in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Home-based nursing care has a positive impact on the growth and development of preterm infants in Sokoto State.
  2. Home-based nursing care leads to improved weight gain and developmental outcomes for preterm infants.
  3. Effective home-based nursing care improves the health outcomes of preterm infants in Sokoto State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on preterm infants who have received home-based nursing care in Sokoto State. Data will be collected through caregiver surveys, infant health assessments, and nurse interviews. Limitations may include difficulties in tracking long-term outcomes and variations in home care practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Home-Based Nursing Care: Care provided by trained nurses in a home setting to support the health and development of infants after hospital discharge.
  • Preterm Infants: Infants born before 37 weeks of gestation who may require special medical attention and monitoring.
  • Growth and Development: The physical and cognitive progress of preterm infants, including weight gain and reaching developmental milestones.
